With college football schedules across the country in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SEC announced Thursday afternoon that it has moved to a 10-game schedule, a conference only for the 2020 season. The SEC is pushing the start of its season until Saturday, Sept. 26, what was originally scheduled to be Week 4 of the 2020 campaign.

It is currently unknown how the SEC will fill the two additional games of its schedule just for the conferences as the revised set of games will be announced by the league at a later date. SEC members traditionally play eight conference games each season: six in their respective divisions, one permanent transverse division opponent and one rotational divisional division opponent.

With the change of season to Sept. 26, the SEC Championship Games will be pushed back two weeks to Saturday, Dec. 1

The SEC joins the Big Ten and Pac-12 by deciding to play a conference schedule only in 2020. The ACC announced on Wednesday that it will play an 11-game schedule with 10 indoor competitions and one non-conference game.

It is unknown at this time how the SEC’s decision may affect ACC’s scheduling plans given four major non-conference rivalry games (Florida-Florida State, Clemson-South Carolina, Georgia-Georgia Tech). , Kentucky-Louisville) which will be lost with the SEC move. Auburn has also been set to play for North Carolina this season.

Other games that did not leave a mark of non-conference featuring SEC teams this season were LSU-Texas and Tennessee-Oklahoma. The Big 12 has yet to announce any solid plans for its 2020 schedules, although losing those games could affect its decision-making process.
